India is world No.4 in supercomputers

India is certainly giving the West a run for its money where super computing is concerned.

India has been ranked number four in the world, in a global list of countries with the most powerful supercomputers. Only the US, China and Germany are ahead of India in the first, second and third slots.

The Top 500 list, prepared by experts in Germany and US, ranks only countries which have the top 500, India is ranked fourth for the kind of supercomputers we have- with the 13th fastest supercomputer in the world.

Ranked among the top five countries with the best supercomputers. India is ahead of even advanced nations such as France, Sweden, Norway, UK. Our supercomputers are better than those in some laboratories in the US, Russia, Spain, Canada and Netherlands.

However, one amazing fact is that of the 13 most powerful supercomputers in the world. 10 are from the US, that find a place in the first nine. The tenth fastest is from China, (the most powerful supercomputer outside the US), 11th from Germany, 12th form US, and then India with the 13th fastest supercomputer in the world, just three places away from China and two from Germany, but way a head of a whole lot of European countries and other US labs.

“It is to the credit of India that it runs a supercomputer that rivals the world’s best, particularly, the Computational Research Laboratory at Pune, whose supercomputer ranks 13th fastest in the world. It speaks for what we are capable of. It won’t be surprising if we soon acquire a supercomputer that may pip China’s to be fastest outside the US, “say researchers from C-DAC.

IBM at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, is the world’s fastest supercomputer followed closely by Cray at Oak Ridge, USA. Outside the US, the most powerful is the Chinese-built Dawning 5000A at the Shanghai Supercomputer Center, while the Indian system, close to the Dawning, is a Hewlett-Packard configuration.

  2. This is good to know about that, one must feel proud abut that….but

The world’s fastest supercomputer is Cray XT5, also known as Jaguar. Jaguar bags the no. 1 spot, beating IBM’s Roadrunner, who has been holding the top crown since past 18 months.

At no. 2 is IBM Roadrunner, which was crowned No. 1 in June 2008 after becoming the first supercomputer to break one petaflop/s. IBM’s Roadrunner managed 1.042 petaflops. The supercomputer is located at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

At no. 3 in the latest Top500 list is another upgraded Cray XT5 system, also known as Kraken.

The no. 4 position goes to IBM’s BlueGene/P supercomputer located at the Forschungszentrum Juelich in Germany.

and others are from USA….till 10th.

so we are still out of the TOP 10 super computers, provided behind these super computers, 36.87% are indian….and moved there and working for them…
